Msg Subject: Sailboat cruising in Abaco and the rest of the Bahamas

Beginning 10/18/2008 my wife and I are taking our sailboat Wu-Hsin to the Bahamas for a 6 month cruise.  We plan to start in the Abacos and work clockwise around through Eluthra, Exumas, Andros, Grand Bahama spending approximately 1 month in each group then back to the States.  Is anyone planning to be in any of these locations in that period?

Welcome to our playground. I believe you are our first sailboater, so I'm sure some of us will have questions for you.

Oh, and so far we are still pretty local to Florida (most of us anyway) but as we grow I hope to find members willing to make the crossing.

If you come back into the states thru Florida we will have to try our best to catch up with you for a meet and greet.

Thanks.  What part of Florida?  We are currently living on our farm in the NC mountains.  We keep Wu-Hsin at the closest seaport to us which is Charleston, SC.  We will leave Charleston around 10/23/08 headed for Lake Worth inlet, Peanut Island, Riviera Beach. We should arrive about 18 days later. My dad lives near there and we'll be staying there a few days then waiting for a weather window to make the crossing to West End, Grand Bahama island.  There should be a tidal wave of boaters, power and sail headed south on the ICW then, we'll just be little fish cought up in the migration.

We are an ever expanding group, but a lot of us are in Central Florida.

On your way down or back if you get the chance to be around Daytona on a weekend maybe we can show you around Disappearing Island.

We have a destination article written about peanut island, but have yet to make arrangements to get down there.

Are you sailing the IWC or the outside? Do you stay at marinas or just come in for supplies?  (maybe it's just me that will have a ton of questions)

Maybe on your trip back some of us can finaly try and get the peanut island trip planned and catch up with you down there. ( I know it's a long way off still, but sometimes it takes us a lot of planning)

Folks, sorry for the delay in replying...i'm like that...lots of stuff going on so it takes a few days to get back.

lebitch, we only live aboard for the cruises.  From 4/29/08 through 7/9/08 we were living aboard for our round trip to Norfolk via the ICW.  Like driving I-95 the same 500 miles...not really a pleasure cruise.

stan,

"Are you sailing the IWC or the outside? Do you stay at marinas or just come in for supplies?  (maybe it's just me that will have a ton of questions)

This trip in October we will take the ICW down to Lake Worth Inlet.  We occasionally stay in marinas but mostly anchor out.

We will be carrying COMPLETE supplies for a 7 months cruise and that's everything from TP to single malt scoth and everything in between. We have a PUR Power Survivor 40E reverse osmosis desalinator/water maker, 460 rated watts of solar panels connected to an Outback MPPT charge controler connected to 420 rated amp hour battery bank, wi-fi laptop with 200 DVDs, 5 CD changer stereo with 300 CDs, short wave radio and VHF.  We could stay out of sight of land for months and not miss much.  We will carry enough premix 2 cycle gasoline for just over 200 miles so we will stop for gas 2 times going down.  On the way back in April we expect to pick up the Gulf Stream north of Bimini and ride it to Charleston, SC in one shot similar to the way our son came back from the Abacos in 2006 on his 27' sailboat, ours is 25'.  He did it single handed though...not easy!

As we get closer we'll know better when exactly we'll hit Daytona.  We have ome flex in the plans so we can adjust for the weekend arrival I hope.  Our only set date is that we want to be at The Bluff House marina and restaurant on Great Guana Cay, Abaco for Thanksgiving Day.

OK for now?  See you again in a few days.

Lou

Wow, please by all means keep us informed of your progress. I hope you may have time to do a blog for us who will be stuck working day in and day out on land. This trip sounds like a whole lot of fun.

It doesn't sound like this is your first adventure like this, how many times have you done trips like this, if you don't mind me asking.
