Msg Subject: L.E.D. Lights.

I was asked not too long ago about all the hype over L.E.D. lights.

L.E.D.'s save fuel, Huh? Here is how. A regular bulb takes more energy to burn, sometimes ten times as much, this energy comes from your battery. This energy has to be replaced, which is done by the alternator. The alternator is powered by the engine, so the more energy it has to produce the more the engine has to produce too. So, if you reduce the outgoing energy by using L.E.D.'s, you save fuel by not having to replace so much energy in the battery.

L.E.D.'s are as much as 25% brighter, although the light is more concentrated in one direction. That means if you are looking directly at an L.E.D. light you can't miss it. The down side to this is the industry has yet to make a good replacement bulb for conventional lights. Conventional lights reflect a large percentage of light from the back side of the bulb, and since L.E.D.'s are directional they don't reflect well. This isn't an issue if you are upgrading housings and all, just for replacement bulbs.

L.E.D. lights last up to ten times longer, because they don't have elements that create light from heat. This means they are also cooler to the touch, should you ever have a reason to touch one.

So, even though the up front cost is more, they will pay for themselves in fuel savings, and longer life. Most of the ones we use at work even come with a five year replacement warrenty, do the with a conventional bulb!
