Msg Subject: Making the Break from Land to Water

I wrote this article before we moved aboard, things have changed alot since then but for anyone thinking of making the break it will give you an idea of what we went through....

We have been staying aboard lebitch 3-4 days a week since her arrival in May 2007.

For Thanksgiving we stayed aboard for several days and I cooked my first GOBBLE, GOBBLE in my new princess 3 burner stove/oven. Turned out as good as if I'd cooked it in a full size oven. Was a little difficult manuevering in a small galley after having such a large kitchen for so many years. I have discovered most of those kitchen gadgets we accumulate are really unneccessary. After eating lunch with family aboard we walked down to the Marina Picnic area where they had a very nice potluck Thanksgiving meal.

In December for the Holiday we stayed the week and it was great I cooked my very first prime rib dinner and it was simple awesome..... It was a bit chilly so we didnt spend much time on deck we sat inside the salon and enjoyed the day watching movies and eating..

Believe ME I have burnt my fair share of cookies and brownies trying to learn the heat adjustment on that new stove... and buying groceries I am learning to downsize on that. I no longer have a huge pantry. Maybe the captain will lose some of his TUMMY!!!! HEHEHEHE burnt cookies and no snack food in the pantry.

Closing up a house full of memories... I thought this would be difficult but it hasnt, as I pull things out of closets and drawers and boxes..things packed away for what seems like a lifetime, I started to realize I dont need them, things I had kept to remind me of my parents who are deceased. I find that their memories are as clear today without the the objects.  I didnt need them to remember, all those memerories are with me, not with those little trinkets. So although I did save a few, the rest have gone to friends, family or sold at a yard sale.
PHOTOS...do you realize how many of them we have?? my gosh boxes and boxes of pictures, we havent looked at them in years. Now they are all going on CD's and the originals to family or the trash.
Antiques, Furniture, and just junk???Again just a bunch of old stuff I got at yard sales/antique stores. I dont need them on lebitch!!! Yard sale they go
CLOTHES and SHOES...again where did it all come from, stuff i have never worn, will never fit again, or I CAN'T BELIEVE I bought this!!!!!...ALL GONE to Yard Sale

The attic, WOW I didnt know I had enough Christmas decorations to decorate three trees!!! WHY?? Because I just kept buying crap I didnt need!!! I WILL NEVER ADMIT that to the Captain!!
Boxes of tax returns that are 20 years old or more, car titles to cars, trucks and boats that we sold/scrapped or whatever, my divorce papers from over 20 years ago, WHY????
Isnt it FUNNY what we keep...

With moving aboard day coming SOON, all that STUFF is now gone or in boxes to go. And I didnt shed a tear!! Instead what a relief to get rid of it.

NOW AS FOR THE CAPTAIN and the First Mate:
There GARAGE!!! They NEED to keep everything, car parts to cars we havent owned in years, things they pick up and say "whats this", the other says "I don't know but we may need it someday" so in a box to keep it goes...  and men say women are bad! YEAH RIGHT, but of course it was a man that said that.
Will have to rent a storage building for all there THINGS...

I hope you enjoyed reading this,
Millissa

We have gone over the same ideas about "stuff" and what we realy need so when the time comes we can move into our "land yacht" and be free of the weekend worries of the lawn and such. It sounds so liberating to let go and enjoy peoples company instead of as many material things.

I had this crazy thought yesterday while talking to someone about our plans, with all this "Carbon Footprint " talk going around maybe those of us who do move into smaller spaces should be subsidized by the government for living "green".

Thanks for the article on moving out.  I found it very interesting.  I , also own a lot of things that I don't really need.  However, I still have most of them.  I am trying to slowly clean them out.  It's hard!

Hey LeB,

You two are awsome. I'm working on the wife to do the live-aboard thing. She still wants a small place close to or on the water,so she has solid ground when a bad storm or such rolls in. I can not wait to see the hat when you guys get done with her.

I was worried at first of the storms, but after we sit out our first Hurricane (Francis) with the kids and dogs on our 35' SeaRay, the worry was gone.

Now when it storms, is when I really enjoy the boat. It rocks me into a great since of comfort and safety.

When people ask how do I like living aboard...My only response " I wish we would of done it 20 years ago "

Giving up material things was not nearly as hard as I thought. We lived on 40 acres with horses, and other livestock... Talk about a big life change

MILLISSA,

WE ARE SLOWLY BUT SURELY GETTING CLOSER TO THE POINT OF WHERE YOU AND TERRY ARE! I EVEN STARTED "CLEANING" THINGS OUT LASTNIGHT AND THAT STARTED A WHOLE CONVERSATION BETWEEN ME AND CHRIS ABOUT WHAT AREA TO CLEAN OUT NEXT!! CAN'T WAIT! NOT SURE EXACTLY HOW WE WILL MAKE THE BREAK, AS I'M SURE PLANS WILL CHANGE AS WE GET CLOSER. BUT, JUST THE THOUGHT OF HAVING THAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO IS GOOD FOR ME RIGHT NOW!

Dont wait to long, you will regret waiting.

Years ago when we had a 26' cruiser, thats when I wish we would of moved aboard. I think back now to all the money I could have saved if I would of just done it then. Instead we waited until the kids were gone and we could get a larger vessel.

The thing is we really would of been fine on the 26', after all when your on the water you dont spend much time in the cabin area so why does it need to be big.

Now that we got rid of all are STUFF and limited it to a small amount, I have learned it is all unneccessary. I walk around the boat every day and find something else I thought I needed to keep that I wonder know WHY?? And off it goes.

I was sent from above to convert you all...beware...You will both be live aboards before long..

You will be leaving your kids, and all your troubles, all the material things you thought you needed, you will be happy, healthier, and enjoy your lives and spouses more than ever..
