Msg Subject: Twins or single?

Can someone give me a good answer to the question of which is better?

If you have two of the same size and style boats, one with a single 200 and the other with twin 150's which one is going to use more fuel? the motors are about the same age, all three two strokes, so what are the advantages of the twins?

it seems to me that the twins would be about the same on fuel, maybe even a little better since you don't have to run three hundred horsepower as hard to maintane the same speed as you do two hundred even though you have to feed two.  Plus you have twice the thrust with the twins so less power to move the same weight.

I know the maintanence will be double, but I do my own work so it wouldn't be a major expense labor wise.

So, pros/cons?

Pros: Yes better fuel milage, running at less rpms on twins

Easier to handle/manuever

One breaks down the other gets you home

Cons: Parts... twice as many to buy

Thanks, when we get ready for another boat I want to have the answers BEFORE the salesman starts telling me "oh yeah you need this or that".

Twins if price is not an issue, for more than just fuel reasons. You can put more prop in the water with two smaller motors than one larger ( with the motors you are speaking of ). The other is longevity of the motor. In my case I have twin 150 2-stroke yamaha's. My dry haul weight is 5500lbs. at 27.5' LOA. I can cruise 28-30 mph on the gps at 3400 rpms. I can keep my rpms low because I have twins. Also when your motor is loading up due to torque it is distributed between two motors. But one of the best reason for two... I can run shallower because my motor isn't set below the keel. Also I burn about 2.0 gph - 2.2 gph if I am loaded with 4-6 people plus gear.

Your going to make me call you bad names. We ended up getting a single 200 two stroke, 2 gph at an idle. We aren't too  different size wise, 26'7" LOA  but 15 gph at 30 mph.

Would not be the first time I was called bad names.  The flow meters running to each motor reads 7.2- 7.6 as we run. That is per motor. We idle with both screws turning at 2 gph and travel is 5-5.5 mph.

I mistyped earlier the 2.0-2.2 gph was incorrect. I burn 15gph with twins at 28-30 mph. I ment I could get 2.0-2.2 miles per gallon.

Now  I feel better we are close to the same fuel burn. We usualy cruise around 28-30 at about 4500 rpm's, and with the bracket I can run shallower now too.
