ReplyMsg Posted: 12:05 AM 6/20/2008 ( msg #226 ) Msg Subject: Trailer Maintance How many of us neglect to properly maintain the trailer our beloved boats ride on? For most of us the maintance we perform is checking lights, greasing wheel bearings, and checkimg to see if our winches work. I am very guilty of this mis conception. The boat my wife and I restored, was all we were concerned about, and it bit us in the rearend on fathers day. With all the work on the boat I never really looked to hard at the trailer and found out the hard way that the steel trailer under my boat was bad. A major support broke and left me stranded on the side of the road for oveer 4 hours with my wife and children waiting on a low-boy tractor trailer with a 53 foot trailer. that was the only way to get it home. Our trailers should be more thuroly inspected. The springs for the axles,or torsion axles if that is the type you have. Check to see if there is an extreme amount of rust on any cross supports,u-bolts, and or nuts for fasteners. The sping hard wear is very important as well. If I left any parts out I am very sorry, but think you get the hint. Nobody wants to spend the last half of your boat outing on the side of the road for longer then you are in the water. |
