Msg Subject: Inexperienced Boaters

Twice this week we have seen mishaps from inexperienced Boaters.

At the Sandbar in East Palatka, St johns River a Cuddy Cabin not paying attention to the outgoing tide. Sitting with the outdrive almost completely out of the water while the owners play behind it. As the boat is listing to one side they decide time to move.

Takes about 10 men to get the boat afloat.

Forgot to tell about the second boater.

A temporary resident at our marina, First time boat owner of a 40' plus trawler. Was taking instructions on boat handling from our marina, just had all new electronic installed. Taking his first voyage.

Leaves the marina and heads north after being informed by the marina he needs more experience before taking off. Hits Myrtle Beach SC late in the evening and sinks his vessel.

Bet he wishes he would of had a little more experience!

Maybe he shouldnt have changed the name of the vessel.

Now why in the world would he listen. Probably a man getting pointers from a woman, who was far more experianced then him and he did not like it. I have been there, got very good advice from a much more experianced female boater, but did not listen. Fortunatly for my family and I things did not turn out so bad for us. Now if she tells me anything I listen with no exceptions. I do feel bad for the guy, that is a terible way to end your trip.

Yes, I too have seen my fair share of inexperienced boaters making you wonder if they will make it home alive. Although those of us who have been doing it a while are not excempt from doing dumb things, I wasn't paying attention and ran into shallow water Saturday. I'm just glad Randy and Dave were paying attention and didn't follow me. I didn't get stuck, just churned up sand, but still a rookie move.

You talk about inexperienced boaters, Disappearing island was a fun place to watch people who don't understand sandbars this weekend.  We saw several "go fast" boats run up on bars and spend quite a while rooster tailing to try and get back to deeper water. What makes that so funny is all they realy had to do was get out and they could have walked the boat out to deeper water. More motors than sense, go figure!

Oh and yes I have run into the shallows, but not wide open throttle(in a long time anyway).

I love watching them plow into the sandbars, islands and then have to full throttle to get off. Of course they cant just get out and push themselves off because that would be uncool...

OMG!! The ones this past weekend were funny.  Most of them were showing out trying to get around other boats and instantly came to a COMPLETE stop!!!!!
