For a leisurely paddle along a scenic unspoiled Florida river, look no further than Myakka River near Clearwater, Florida. Although motor boats are discouraged (they might even be prohibited), if you're looking for an exciting paddle among the Florida 'gators, Myakka River is a good bet.
We paddled our tandem kayak along the winding river in November of 2006, which was the perfect time: few mosquitoes, and the sun was still warm enough for multiple alligator sightings all along the banks. Our paddle lasted about 2 hours down the river, and an hour back. Along the banks of the river, there were numerous beaches and small islets where we eventually enjoyed a picnic lunch before heading back to the Myakka Lake where our companions had rented a canoe.
This is one of my favorite paddling experiences in Florida: I enjoyed watching the enormous and multiple alligators, sunning themselves on the shore as I paddled by unmolested. We camped at Myakka State Park campgrounds, and later rode our bikes along the many park trails that wind throughout the wild Florida forests within the park.
It was a fabulous paddle; we'll do it again.
